Bio

ELHAM DAWSARI is a self taught sculptor, interdisciplinary conceptual artist and writer based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Her work is underpinned by research in the fields of urban design, feminism and social theory as well as speculating on life in a pre-internet Saudi Arabia.

Dawsari majored in Accounting & Business Management, King Saud University, and worked in financial advisory while also maintaining a freelance career as an illustrator. Through her illustration projects, she seized the opportunity to further specialize in creative content. Dawsari went on to work as a content/ creative writer, brand manager and media advisor, enrolling in art direction, urban sketching and strategic marketing classes from University of the Arts London and INSEAD, Paris. 

Dawsari has completed a month-long residency in Torrelles de Foix, Barcelona, Spain at the Mas els Igols Residency (February, 2020). Influenced by her residency experience, she decided to pursue a full-time career as an artist, culminating with Nfah, an art installation debuted at Sharah Art Fair in Jeddah (November, 2020) organized by The Saudi Art Council.

Born and raised in the midwest and east coast of the United States, Dawsari moved back to Riyadh when she was in high school in the mid 1990s. A tireless explorer, her need to experience various forms of art expression, coupled with her professional practice in business, journalism, advertising, creative writing and translation, have attributed to her resourceful and holistic approach to art-making as an independent artist.

Art Statement

Dawsari explores the human condition of Riyadh’s 1980’s and 90’s pre-internet women of middle and lower economic classes, and how economic and social classifications influenced their lives and behaviors. She also focuses on the relation between urban landscaping and human behavior specific to these women. The artist collects professional and domestic accounts of working and non-working women, and how concepts of money, spatiality and mobility factor into them. As this ongoing study is a personal journey for the artist herself, having grown up in the 90’s in Riyadh, she seeks to capture the sentiment in these women’s memories of a visually undocumented, pre-internet time in conservative Saudi households specifically.  

The artist deep dives into her family’s own archive of memories, stories and photo albums, as well as resources in literature and text, and conducting one-on-one interviews of her subjects for wider research and documentation. Through her personal research and artwork she encourages filling in the chasmic gaps of visual and written history as it pertains to Saudi women’s daily lives. She aims to reinstate a generation of older women into the current discourse of a new cultivated Saudi in a proud tribute to the women and girls of a recent past deeply contrasting with today’s thriving and youthful social scene.

إلهام الدوسري نحاتة وفنانة مفاهيمية (بحثية) مستقلة متعددة الممارسات الفنية وكاتبة، مقيمة في الرياض بالمملكة العربية السعودية. يرتكز عملها على أبحاث في مجالات التصميم الحضري والنساء والنظرية الاجتماعية بالإضافة إلى التمعن في الحياة في المملكة العربية السعودية ما قبل الإنترنت

تخصصت الدوسري في المحاسبة وإدارة الأعمال من جامعة الملك سعود، وعملت في الاستشارات المالية إلى جانب امتهان العمل الحر في المجال الإبداعي كرسامة ومصممة رسومات. بعدها، تشعبت إلهام في العمل الإبداعي لتعمل أيضاً ككاتبة إبداعية ومُعِدّة محتوى رقمي إعلامي ومديرة للعلامة التجارية ومستشارة إعلامية، حيث التحقت بدورات في الإخراج الفني والرسم السريع والتسويق الاستراتيجي من جامعة الفنون في لندن وإنسياد في باريس

أكملت الدوسري إقامة فنية لدى “ماس ألس إيقولس” لمدة شهر في منطقة توريّس دي فوا، برشلونة، كتالونيا في إسبانيا في فبراير من عام 2020. متأثرة بتجربتها في الإقامة، عزمت إلهام التفرغ لممارسة الفن، مبتدئة بتنفيذ عمل “نفاه”، وهو عمل فني تركيبي وخزفي تم عرضه لأول مرة في معرض شارة في جدة نوفمبر من عام 2020، ومن تنظيم المجلس الفني السعودي

ولدت الفنانة ونشأت في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، وعادت إلى الرياض في المرحلة المتوسطة في منتصف التسعينيات. مستكشفة لا تعرف الكلل، فقد ساهمت كل من حاجتها إلى تجربة أشكال مختلفة من التعبير الفني إلى جانب امتداد ممارساتها المهنية في قطاع الأعمال والتسويق والصحافة والكتابة الإبداعية والترجمة، في اتساع حيلة نهجها العملي والشامل في صناعة الفن كفنانة ممارسة مستقلة

بيان فني

تستكشف الدوسري الحالة الإنسانية وآثار المدنية عليها بشكل عام، وحياة النساء في ثمانينيات وتسعينيات القرن الماضي في الرياض من الطبقات الاقتصادية المتوسطة والدنيا بشكل خاص، وكيف أثّرت التصنيفات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية على حياتهن وسلوكياتهن، والعلاقة بين التصميم الحضري والسلوك البشري الخاص بهؤلاء النساء. تجمع الفنانة قصص النساء العاملات وغير العاملات من خلال إجراء مقابلات معهن، لفهم أثر مفاهيم المال والمكانية والتنقل على حياتهن. ونظرًا لأن هذه الدراسات والأبحاث المستمرة هي رحلة شخصية للفنانة نفسها، حيث نشأت في التسعينيات في الرياض، فهي تسعى إلى إدراك وتحليل وتصوير المشاعر المختزلة في ذكريات هؤلاء النساء لزمن ما قبل الإنترنت غير الموثق بصريًا في الأسر السعودية المحافظة على وجه التحديد

تستند الفنانة إلى أرشيف عائلتها من الذكريات والقصص وألبومات الصور، بالإضافة إلى مراجع نصية وأدبية، وإجراء مقابلات فردية مع هؤلاء النساء من أجل تحقيق جهد أشمل في البحث والتوثيق. من خلال أبحاثها الشخصية وأعمالها الفنية، تشجع الدوسري على سد فجوة التوثيق البصري والنصي فيما يخص الحياة اليومية للمرأة السعودية، وعلى خلق مساحة آمنة لجيل من النساء السعوديات الأكبر سناً للمشاركة في الخطاب الحالي للسعودية كبلد يزدهر اجتماعياً وثقافياً بشكل متواتر، تكريماً وإجلالاً لأولئك النساء والفتيات من الماضي القريب شديد التباين مع المشهد السعودي الاجتماعي اليوم
